Hewlett-Packard has released recently the HP ProLiant ML150 G6 Server series, a new 5U tower 2-socket system based on Intel’s new Nehalem CPU microarchitecture.

When compared to the Intel 5100 chipset-based ProLiant ML150 G5, the ML150 G6 (Generation 6) with the Intel 5500 chipset features newer Intel Xeon dual- or quad-core processors with integrated memory controllers, support for up to 48GB of DDR3 memory instead of up to 16GB DDR2, new controller and adapter options, a new chassis design, and other innovations.

The latest ProLiant tower is offered with one or two Xeon E5500 series CPUs, up to 24GB of RAM per CPU, up to 8 SAS or SATA hard drives (via 2nd drive cage), an optional P410 or P212 storage controller along with an on-board 4-port SATA controller, and an embedded HP NC107i Gigabit LAN adapter. The ML150 G6 is available in two versions – with hot plug or with non-hot plug hard drive support.

There are one full height or two half height media bays that can be populated with optical drives, internal tape drives, or removable backup HDDs, an optical drive bay, four PCI Express slots, and a PCI slot.

Optionally, customers can order the HP ProLiant 100 G5 Lights-Out 100c card enabling remote management of the server over a LAN or the Internet, as well as redundant power supplies, redundant case fans and a TPM module for enhanced security.

The ProLiant ML150 G6 features 8 USB ports – 4 rear, 2 internal (1 for internal USB tape), and 2 on the front of the case. On the rear side of the chassis, there are also a VGA connector and a Serial port beside keyboard, mouse, NIC and dedicated NIC ports.

Operating system choices include various Windows, SUSE Linux, and Red Hat Linux server versions, as well as VMware virtualization software.

The HP ML150 G6 models are currently sold for a starting price of around $1,000 at HP.com and various retailers.
