LoJack for Laptops – How it Works
Friday, July 31, 2009 12:25Computrace LoJack for Laptops, a software-based theft recovery service, is designed to track, locate, and recover stolen computers and protect users’ data.
LoJack for Laptops is based on the Computrace Agent software that is embedded into the BIOS firmware of computers. Some PC makers, such as Dell, optionally embed the Agent into laptops at the factory and offers LoJack service to laptop buyers. However, if you purchase LoJack separately, you can install the Agent yourself.
Absolute Software, maker of Computrace LoJack, explains how the service works if a theft occurs:
The Agent in your computer maintains daily contact with the Absolute Monitoring Center. If you report your computer stolen, Agent contact will increase to every 15 minutes. Increased contact allows us to obtain specific details like the physical location of your computer, any activity that has occurred post-theft, and other important data that will aid us in working with local law enforcement to catch the thief and return your property to you.
Regardless of recovery status, you can remotely delete data to remove some or all of the information stored on your computer so that it doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. This could include files and applications containing personal photos, internet bookmarks, browser cookies, financial information, and stored passwords. Everything an identity thief would need to steal your identity.
LoJack for Laptops works on Windows PCs, as well as on Macs. Internet connection is required.
The software is available in two versions: LoJack for Laptops Standard Edition and Premium Edition. Standard Edition Includes Theft Recovery Services only, whereas Premium additionally provides Remote Data Delete functionality and Service Guarantee.
